Solar, storage and energy services in Los Angeles

Designed, permitted and installed by a Sylmar-based contractor that works in this utility territory every week — because Los Angeles does not follow the same rules as the county next door.

What we do in Los Angeles

Current Energy designs, installs and maintains solar, battery storage, EV charging, lighting, HVAC, roofing and electrical systems across Los Angeles. Our office is at 15823 Monte St, Suite 101 in Sylmar, so this is local work rather than a territory served from somewhere else.

Typical property here: Commercial and industrial buildings, mixed-use and multifamily, condominium associations, retail, and single-family homes across the basin.

What is different about Los Angeles

A municipal utility changes the maths

This is the single most important local fact and the one most commonly got wrong. Advice written for Southern California Edison customers about export credits, payback periods and battery necessity does not transfer cleanly to an LADWP customer. We work inside LADWP territory constantly — our office is in it.

Dense multifamily, and the EV question

Los Angeles multifamily owners are under real pressure to provide resident EV charging, and the constraint is almost always the building’s electrical service rather than the chargers. Load management frequently avoids a service upgrade that would cost more than every charger combined.

Older commercial buildings

Much of the city’s commercial stock predates modern roof and electrical assumptions. Structural review and roof condition drive the design more than array layout does, and a re-roof before installation is often the cheaper path over the asset’s life.

Which utility serves Los Angeles, and why does it matter?

The City of Los Angeles is served by LADWP, a municipal utility that is not governed by the CPUC decision that created NEM 3.0. LADWP operates its own net metering, interconnection process and program rules, which have generally been more favourable than the Net Billing Tariff — and which change independently of it. It matters because the utility determines what your exported energy is worth, what the interconnection process looks like and how long permission to operate takes. Two properties a few miles apart can have genuinely different economics for the same system.

Is LADWP solar different from SCE and NEM 3.0 in Los Angeles?

Yes, and the difference is the whole calculation. LADWP is a municipal utility running its own net-metering and interconnection program, separate from the CPUC’s Net Billing Tariff. A design and payback model built for an SCE customer under NEM 3.0 does not transfer to an LADWP property.

Can a Los Angeles apartment building add EV charging without a service upgrade?

Sometimes, and it depends entirely on spare capacity at the existing service. Dense multifamily stock in Los Angeles frequently has none, which is why we assess the service and the load before proposing a charger count. Where capacity is short, load management or a service upgrade is sized alongside the charging design.
